IB Programme of Inquiry

Our  PYP Program of Inquiry

At H. Clarke Powers School, the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) Program of Inquiry forms the foundation of our TK-5 curriculum.  It connects key concepts, subject areas and real-world skills through dynamic units of inquiry.  Through hands-on investigation, students develop a deep understanding of core academic content while cultivating the attributes of the IB Learner Profile, growing into inquiring, knowledgeable, principled, and reflective global citizens.

The Six Transdisciplinary Themes

Each year, our learning is framed around six globally significant themes that connect classroom learning to the real world:

  • Who We Are: An inquiry into identity as individuals and as part of a collective.
  • Where We Are In Place and Time: An inquiry into histories and orientation in place, space and time.
  • How We Express Ourselves: An inquiry into the diveristy of voice, perspectives, and expression.
  • How the World Works: An inquriy into understandings of the world and phenomena.
  • How We Organize Ourselves: An inquiry into systems, structures and networks.
  • Sharing the Planet: An inquiry into the interdependence of human and natural worlds.

Note: Students in TK and Kindergarten explore four of these themes each year, while Grades 1-5 engage with all six themes annually.

Learning in Action

Rooted in curiosity, our Program of Inquiry empowers students to ask meaningful questions, collaborate with peers, and take responsible action in their local and global communities.

As the capstone of their PYP journey, our 5th grade students participate in the PYP Exhibition, an in-depth, collaborative inquiry project where they research a real-world issue, propose solutions, and share their learning with the entire school community.
